Designing Around Furniture Instead of Filling Rooms Later

When you’re going through the process of designing your custom home, many homeowners think of furniture as the last step, filling in and personalizing your new layout. First you design the rooms, then you build the house, and then decide what goes where.

But if you already own pieces you love, or you happen to have a good idea of how you want your rooms to function, it’s better to design with them in mind from the beginning. And we’ll tell you why.

At MC Homes, furniture can be part of the conversation long before moving day. As a matter of fact, the more you consider the furniture you’ll put in each room, and how you envision it functioning, the better our design team can outline how the architecture and interiors will work together. We can tell you from experience, this not only allows us to create an optimal design to perfectly fit your final vision, but fitting furniture after-the-fact can be frustrating!

The Room Has to Work With What's Going In It

Room dimensions on a floor plan don’t always tell the whole story. A bedroom may technically be large enough for a king-size bed, for example, but what happens when you add substantial nightstands, a dresser, or a favorite chair? That square footage can get eaten up quickly.

The same applies throughout the home. Maybe you’re bringing a large dining table that has hosted family gatherings for years. Perhaps an antique hutch looking for a new spot to continue aging beautifully. Or it could be the sectional you love and want to make work in the new living room.

Knowing those things during design allows us to think about much more than whether or not a piece simply fits. We can consider how much room is left for comfortable walkways, where doors open, how furniture relates to windows, and whether the finished space will feel balanced.

Sometimes a few inches on a floor plan can make a surprisingly big difference.

It's Often the Small Details That Cause Problems

This is where designing around furniture gets more nuanced.

Imagine placing a bed on the only logical wall in a bedroom, only to discover that the headboard extends awkwardly across the bottom of a window. Or planning to bring a large hutch into the dining room and realizing there isn’t enough uninterrupted wall space because of the doorway placement.

Even the distance between door trim and the corner of a wall can seem insignificant, but can end up being visually distracting. A door may function perfectly well from a construction standpoint, but shifting its location slightly during design could create the wall space needed for a dresser, bookcase, or piece of artwork.

Those aren’t necessarily construction problems. The house could be built exactly as drawn and function perfectly well, in theory. These are living-in-the-house problems, and they’re much easier to address on a floor plan than they are after the drywall is finished.

You Don't Have to Figure All of This Out Yourself

This level of planning might sound like we’re giving you one more homework assignment before you build. But it’s quite the opposite.

You shouldn’t need to calculate furniture clearances, study door swings, or determine whether your bedroom windows conflict with the dimensions of your bed frame. That’s part of what our design team is here to do.

We’ll talk with you about the furniture you’re bringing, the pieces you may want to replace, how you use each room, and what matters to you. From there, those considerations become part of the architectural and interior design process.

And because our designers work alongside the construction team, those conversations aren’t happening separately from the realities of building the home. (One of the many benefits in choosing a design and build contractor.)
