Designing a Home for the Way You Gather

2023 St. Jude Dream Home

With the gathering season just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about welcoming family and friends into your home. From holiday dinners and weekend visits to hosting the entire extended family, these are the moments that become lasting memories. And often, it’s the spaces that bring us together that make those moments even more special.

When designing a custom home, we encourage homeowners to think beyond how they want their spaces to look and consider how they want them to function. Who will gather around the table? Where will everyone naturally gravitate? How can the home accommodate visitors while remaining comfortable for everyday life?

Those conversations help us design spaces that are just as enjoyable to live in as they are to look at.

Making Room for What Matters

A beautiful kitchen or spacious living room doesn’t automatically make a home comfortable for entertaining. How those spaces relate to one another is just as important.

For homeowners who love hosting, we might suggest a kitchen with room for guests to gather without interrupting meal preparation, a dining area that comfortably accommodates larger groups, or a living room arranged to encourage conversation.

And while open-concept layouts remain popular, they aren’t always the right answer. Sometimes a more defined dining room, a separate sitting area, or a quieter space away from the activity creates a better balance.

The goal isn’t simply to make everything bigger. It’s to make each space work for the way you live.

Thoughtful Spaces for Overnight Guests

For many homeowners, especially those building a home where they plan to spend their retirement years, welcoming family and friends is an important part of the vision.

A thoughtfully designed guest suite can give visitors a comfortable place of their own while maintaining privacy for everyone. Room placement, bathroom access, storage, and separation from the home’s primary living areas can all make a difference.

We also consider how those spaces will be used when guests aren’t visiting. Depending on your needs, a flexible room might serve as a reading room, hobby space, or additional sitting area throughout the year.

These decisions are easiest to make early in the design process, when we can consider the home as a whole rather than trying to adapt spaces later.

Designed Around Your Life

No two families gather in exactly the same way. Family and friend groups can range greatly in size.

That’s why our design-build process begins with first understanding how you want to live. Our designers and construction team work together to turn those priorities into your dream home: one that balances beauty, functionality, and your personal style.

We know from experience, the best custom homes are designed for the memories you’ll make in the years ahead.
